Hi Julie, Brighton is a great place for excitement and a good mix of people. Easy to get to London as well. The traffic can be a little hectic though. If you prefer a sandier beach and don't mind being further from London, try looking at Bournemouth. It's reputation for being a retirement place comes from people who haven't been there for a long time. A lot of students from the language schools give it a very young and vibrant atmosphere, and again a good cultural mix.

Hi Julie,
I live in Leeds and agree with Robert is a fantastic city, It has everything you could want but also close to the countryside.
Where about in the states do you live?
I have just come back from visting my cousin in Glendale, California. It was my first time and made many mistakes myself, mostly in my accent, lol.
I hope you find somewhere nice to live.
There is also Manchester which is near one of the main airports for flights to the USA.

hi julie, thanks for reply....london is the mecca for nightlife, but its a giant sprawling place, the city i know best is leeds, about 10 miles from here,as i was born and lived there until 1959.leeds has a population of about ,i supose,1 million, and as a large city it has almost everything,a vibrant music scene, many night clubs, theatres, eateries etc.that gordon ramsey chap is about to open an eatery in leeds,it has the best shopping outside london, and has become a financial centre second only to london[so they say].leeds is almost equidistant from the east/west coasts for days at the seaside.we go to the east coast to scarborough with its ruined castle, beachs, pleasure areas etc, bridlington, filey, whitby of captain cook fame, with its ruined abbey and dracula.but most of all we borrow a friends caravan the village of hunmanby, between scarborough and filey.it has a pub that has karaoke on a weekend,my wife and i give em hell. anything you wish to know............ask

Honestly, I've just sat down and started looking and getting to know the UK. I've always been fascinated by the culture and history of England (and Europe in general) but now I am at a point where I can start seriously considering moving there. Unfortunately, I still know very little about the place!!! I do know that I want to live close to a large city where I can go out on the weekends. I'd really like to avoid a small town where I'll know everyone in the town within a month. ^_^
Thank you so much for your response. If you can think of any cities/towns that sound about like what I'm looking for, please let me know! Thank you!!!

hi julie,i contribute to the over 50s thread on this site.the u.k,regions as in the u.s regions differ.large cities are generaly hard places for strangers to be.myself i live in a largish village outside the city of leeds, people are reasonably social and i like being here and strangers from abroad are made welcome in the pubs and clubs...where do you intend to be,maybe i can give you some pointers

My name is Julie and I'm thinking about moving to the UK in the next few years. I was hoping to make some friends in the area so I don't do anything typical of an American and totally embarassing when I get there. ^_^

If you have any advice for me, please send me a message and let's chat!!! Thanks!
